Some of the best movies are those where the protaganist overcomes the antagonist. It this case it is man vs himself. Jack Nicholson's character has to overcome several personal sets of beliefs in order to do what is right and help his new friends.
Many issues are examined from welfare to prejudices of homosexuals to neighborliness, etc.
